My lineup this week for Southampton vs Brighton.
Defense
Our starting fullbacks were rested versus Manchester City, so I expect both
to return to the starting lineup. Potter has made it clear that he prefers
Burn to Bernardo at left-back, and January signing Tarik Lamptey has
flourished so far for the Albion. Given that Southampton utilize two
forwards (Ings and Adams), it will be essential that the Brigton defense,
particularly our two center-backs, are on their toes. Runs in behind,
through balls, and striker link-up play all come with the threat of a strike
partnership.
Midfield
Davy Propper has struggled since lockdown, giving the ball away in
dangerous positions on numerous occasions. I believe Potter will start Dale
Stephens in his place. Yves Bissouma, in contrast, has matured exceptionally
in 2020. His role in defensive midfield has been cemented with many solid
performances.
The central attacking midfielder could be Aaron Mooy, but I must commend
Gross for his hard work recently. The German has had a significant drop in
form since December, but seems to have rediscovered his creative abilities.
In addition, Potter's recent return to possession-based football seems to
have benefited him.
Attack
This is where the ambiguity often lies in Graham Potter's lineups. In my
lineup predictions, for the past three matches, I have forecasted that
Alireza Jahanbakhsh will start. He has started in none of those matches.
However, he did come on as a substitute versus Manchester City. It seems
foolish to predict him starting again, but given his recent lively
performance, I think he will receive a start.
Manchester United had success creating space off the wide flanks, so I
believe Potter will attempt to emulate that with a 4-2-3-1. Our fullbacks,
combined with quick wingers in Trossard and Ali, will provide strength in
numbers from wide positions. Through the center, Gross or Mooy can provide
support to Maupay up top. I considered starting Glenn Murray, but given
Potter's unusual dislike of the forward, I decided against it. He does have
an unmatched aerial ability, one that could prove effective against a static
and compact Southampton defense.
An important match indeed. Any result will prove helpful in escaping the
relegation battle.
